Did you know that the energy industry, together with the building sector, is still responsible for about 46% of CO2 emissions¹ in Germany?
Legislation on the energy transition requires the installation of intelligent metering systems (smart meters) for larger households² and companies. The costs are borne by the end consumers - without receiving any real added value. We are changing that.

Our Story

Zählerfreunde was founded by five friends from the Isartal near Munich with a clear vision: to transform the energy industry.
‍
They noticed how, for example, finance apps give users full control and real-time transparency over their money—but no comparable solution existed for energy. That’s why they developed a software that makes energy consumption visible at any time and uses intelligent analytics to help people use energy more consciously and efficiently.

In doing so, they create a new connection between users and their energy use. Today, Zählerfreunde supports households and businesses in Germany, Switzerland, and Austria to manage their energy simply, smartly, and sustainably.

zählerfreunde & Mission

Zählerfreunde is a young CleanTech company with an interdisciplinary team of sustainability-oriented software engineers and business administrators. Our mission is to utilize the data from the mandatory Smart Metering systems introduced in the EU to make energy optimizations accessible for every household and business.
How do we plan to do this? Our solution combines consumption data from smart electricity meters with additional IoT device data. Based on this foundation, we develop not only a transparent visualization of consumption and costs but also various smart functionalities to optimize energy usage. Our platform is available for energy industry companies as a white-label product, while independent solutions are offered to smaller businesses.

2020

The idea for Zählerfreunde emerges during Tobias’ Master’s program in “Sustainable Business & Innovation,” as he develops a business model that combines social, ecological, and economic aspects related to smart electricity meters..

2021

Over the course of the year, the founding team comes together, consisting of Tobias, Jakob M., Franz, Jakob K., and Jonas, who combine their technological and business expertise. Together, they develop initial concepts and technical foundations for the platform, establish Zählerfreunde GmbH, and win the EnBW Innovation founder’s grant.

2022

Zählerfreunde successfully completes a pre-seed funding round, attracting investors such as Enpulse, Erich Wex, and capacura. With this momentum, the team continues developing the platform and launches a solution for private customers, enabling smart meter users to have greater control over their electricity consumption.

2023

The focus shifts to developing a white-label energy management solution for municipal utilities, metering point operators, and energy providers. The software is continuously improved to meet the diverse needs of users.

2024

In a seed funding round, Zählerfreunde secures a seven-figure investment. In addition to new investors such as Salzburg AG and Stadtwerke Herne AG, Enpulse also invests again. The capital is strategically used to further develop the platform and drive expansion in the DACH region, with the first customers from Austria and Switzerland already acquired.

2025

The company expands its product range to include solutions for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that are eligible for BAFA funding and support ISO 50001. It also integrates AI to further enhance smart charging capabilities for both customers and businesses.

2026

For the coming year, Zählerfreunde plans to further strengthen its position in the DACH market and expand intelligent energy management into additional European countries. The team continues to grow, and new sustainable innovations are being developed to actively help shape the energy transition.
